You don’t have to spend a lot to get a good handheld vacuum, as evidenced by this Black+Decker Dustbuster.
Wirecutter software engineer Jasmine Khoury, who owns this vacuum, complained that the extension crevice tool doesn’t stay put, retracting with pressure, but we haven’t encountered this problem during testing. A Black+Decker spokesperson bissell handheld vacuum told us via email that this model fully charges in four hours, but in our testing it took less than three hours. It comes with a two-year warranty, which exceeds the coverage of many other handheld vacuum cleaners.

Pop on the extension wands and it turns into a lightweight stick vac or — with the mopping pads attached — a handy tool for removing sticky messes from the floor. Some handheld vacuums contain additional tools like brush rolls and extensions to help you get into hard-to-reach places. If you plan to use your handheld vacuum to get between couch cushions and tackle upholstery or carpet, these are must-haves. But if you want the option of cleaning up wet spills as well as dry (we’re looking at you, parents), the Dirt Devil QuickFlip Wet/Dry Hand Vacuum is an excellent choice.
Given its good performance, especially when removing pet hair, we’d be willing to spend that on this supplementary cleaning tool. For cordless models, we monitor the run time and for models being considered for our Cleaning Awards, we ask real consumers to use and rate each vacuum before we determine our award winners. After completing 246 tests and amassing almost 1,000 data points, we chose the top-scoring hand vacuums. The Black+Decker Dustbuster AdvancedClean Slim HLVC320J01 seemed promising at first because of its decent suction, but it had an especially slow charge time of 10 hours and an extremely narrow crevice tool. We also had difficulties opening the dustbin during our testing and ended up showered with glitter. To test pet-hair pickup, we spread a handful of fur (from a local groomer) into a rug and then try to pick it up with each vacuum. If a model comes with an attachment that may improve pet-hair pickup, such as rubber nubs, or better yet, a motorized brush, we use it.
The four foot hose made it easy to reach into tight spaces, and it ran for 23 minutes at standard power on one charge. Our tester called this hand vac “very comfortable to use,” giving it perfect scores in six of our seven ease of use evaluations, including for handle comfort and for quality of the owner’s bissell cordless vacuum manual. Although it fell from its previous spot as our best overall handheld vacuum, we still love the Black+Decker Cordless Lithium Hand Vacuum—it’s also one of our top-rated inexpensive vacuum cleaners. Here’s what we—plus our cat and puppy sidekicks—thought of the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Cordless Vacuum. Its filter is washable and reviewers were impressed with its suction, especially given its small size, but many noted that with a three-and-a-half-hour charge time, they wished it could run for longer than just 12 minutes. You likely won’t be able to clean very much on one charge given its short runtime and very small dust cup, but it can be charged on the go from your laptop or in your car thanks to its USB charger.
