In 1974, automotive wheel designer Skip Hess took matters into his own garage and produced the first cast magnesium BMX wheel, the Motomag. He then started producing alloy versions of the Motomag that became a mainstay in the sport with their combination of durability and lightweight performance. With the success of the Motomag, Hess started a new bicycle brand he called Mongoose.
Synonymous with BMX, Mongoose bikes are trusted by some of the world’s best riders. Born out of a garage in SoCal back in 1974, Mongoose has a BMX bike for riders of all ages and ability levels. For over 45 years, Mongoose has been in the dirt, mongoose mountain bike at the park, and on the street. Skip Hess went on to develop the Electra brand, but he stepped down in 2014 when it was sold to Trek. When I think of the old mongoose from my childhood, I think of those huge circle gussets, odd square section, and loop tails and the dull nickel chrome finish. But both genre are aging, I don’t see any young people here in the museum, seriously, I think everyone here is over the age 40.. Skip Hess started BMX Products, Inc. out of his home in Simi Valley, California in September 1974 with his first product being the famous Motomag One wheel. According to Hess, at its largest stage of expansion, BMX Products, Inc. employed about 85 people. In its early years, Hess recalled that about 600 frames per day were produced at its Chatsworth, Los Angeles location.
