It’s really a two-part grill that packs up into a lightweight, easy-to-carry package. The base comes off and features a flip-out propane bottle holder (we discourage you from using those; see why below) as well as serving as a place to cut. The integrated bamboo cutting board fits on top of the base, which gives you somewhere to prep your meal even if there’s no picnic table around.
The Weber Q 2400 Electric grill raises the bar on flavor expectations and performance of an electric grill. Sear burgers, steaks and chops; grill chicken, fish, vegetables and fruit on the porcelain-enameled cast-iron grates. If it’s hard to move, it isn’t actually a portable grill; it’s just a grill that’s smaller than you’d like it to be. After cooking for a little more than an hour, I noticed fraying in the piece of fabric immediately below the charcoal basket where I had used a firestarter. If food drips on to the coals, causing a flare-up, I’d also expect some fraying.
No matter how you measure it, the Traveler’s 13,000-BTU burner gets plenty hot and really shines when searing. The 320-square-inch grilling surface is big enough to grill for a crowd. It’ll still fit in the trunk of most cars, but it definitely takes up a considerable amount of space.
I managed to batch cook on it as it does stay hot, but again without a lid, it doesn’t last as long as the Weber grill. I liked that its cork lid doubles portable bbq as a base for the grill, to protect your table. Just make sure that you line up the dips of the lid with the vents to allow airflow while cooking.
The Jumbo Joe has a considerable following on the internet. Fans have added thermometers, fastened knobs to make it easier to open and close vents, attached hanging ashcans, and come up with creative ways to cook taller items, like beer-can chicken. Thanks to its dual-vent system (one at the bottom, one at the top), you get the weber q same fine-grained level of temperature control you’ll find in Weber’s full-size kettles. Suitable for cityscapes and campsites alike, you can use the Solo Stove Ranger Fire Pit to grill directly over the nearly-smokeless open flame. Otherwise, you can grab the cast iron grill top accessory to add some grill marks to your grub.
Whether it’s the salty sweetness on that lightly charred corn or the rich smoothness of smoked meat, warm weather begs us to get outside and light a fire. The ubiquitous disposable, green propane bottle is convenient, but it’s a huge source of pollution. It’s illegal in many jurisdictions to throw them in the trash, though that doesn’t stop many people, it seems, given how many of these end up in landfills every year. Not everyone has a yard, and it’s increasingly common for apartments to ban open flame grills on balconies. It should be easy to get underneath those burgers and flip them over. If you live in California, you may also be able to bring in 1-pound canisters for free refills or exchange empty canisters for full ones.
This is the grill that I still have and use time after time, mostly because it looks so cute on my kitchen shelf when not in use, and it is so convenient. It gets full points from me for portability, and even more for its stylish design and colorways. To put it simply, it makes grilling a total weber genesis 2 breeze, whether you’re at home or in the mountains. I managed to squeeze up to six small burgers on this grill. In review
I was very impressed with the cooking ability of this small yet mighty grill as we used it to cook everything from burgers to a Tomahawk steak plus kebabs and more.
There are no vents to open and close, so you’ll have to control heat with the lid and by how you add fuel. It’s cooking, the old-fashioned way, but if you haven’t done that much you might want to practice before you have hangry kids clamoring for dinner. Still, if your primary criteria is portability, this is the best grill around. This portable grill is a design statement, that much is for sure. To be honest, it was actually going to go on my wedding gift list so when I was given the opportunity to review one I practically leaped for joy.
