Hiking the Samuel H Boardman State Scenic Corridor 2024

There are also different shapes to choose from. Although this is a relatively small park, there are so many more trails and spots to explore. After spending several days here, I can easily say this is my favorite stretch of the Pacific Coast that I’ve seen. Seeing views like these always reminds me how powerful the ocean is and how rugged and beautiful our coasts can be. There isn’t one specific route we followed, as there were lots of forks in the trail splitting off in different directions. We meandered around the area marveling at the different rock formations and expansive views up and down the coast.

On Oregon’s coast the sun sometimes sets into a fog bank rather than the actual ocean. But by evening the fog is often breaking up, as it was for us at China Beach. So l ignited the clouds with stripes of golden fire, peeked out between layers, and then left the horizon glowing for a full hour. It’s easy to forget that the ocean can rise 8 feet in the dark. Even if you’re tenting above the high tide line, a tsunami would be trouble. The correct answer is you should shuttle 20 miles each evening to the hiker/biker campsites at Harris Beach.

It is called a “bridge” after all but again, take care, the bridge is narrow, dips down, is a bit smoother because of the traffic on it, and dangerous to walk on. First, the beach can be really windy in the afternoon until the sun sets. Plan to pitch your tent on the leeward side of a rock or headland – usually the south side.

At China Beach I cleared a safe-looking tent site behind a windbreak boulder. This mostly involved removing the blackened rocks and buried charcoal of earlier picnic fires. In Oregon, beach fires are not allowed in driftwood piles or against logs. Backpackers generally rely on low-impact stoves, without building fires at all. We hiked on to the next cove, 2 miles south, where ours were the only footprints. If you follow the right path down to Natural Bridges, it takes about 20 minutes (it’s a strenuous hike).

Less than 10 miles roundtrip, the Duck Lake is the perfect overnight backpacking trip to experience classic Sierra lakes and mountains. I’ve been perpetually traveling and living around the world for years but it’s hard to beat Oregon and the PNW. After years of road-tripping the area, I guess you can say I know it pretty well! When I’m not writing guides for you, you can catch me somewhere petting a dog, attempting to surf, hiking a volcano, or stuffing my face with bread and cheese. This was a really fun trail that we didn’t expect.

To the left there is a small peninsula that juts out where you can get a glimpse around the bend towards the other side of the ocean. We then wandered to the right, where you can actually crawl down the steep cliff and stand directly over the bridge. Next we crossed Indian Sands, a patch of dunes that’s crumbling off cliffs into the sea. Then the trail descended to a picnic area at Whaleshead Beach. It’s named for a whale-shaped island that actually spouts from its head when the tide is right.

Ozark Trail Sleeping Bags

So before you run off to loop around, take a look at the beach or the least, catch it on your way back from the loop. You can access both of these hikes from the same parking lot as Lone Ranch South or drive up to the closer parking spot just a tad north. The beach trail takes you to the rocks and hills all to the left of the beach where you can clamber up and get some pretty stellar views of the coastline. We created Agile Camping to assemble a dedicated aid to allow campers of all levels to enjoy their time in the great outdoors.

It has the potential to be an even greater attraction than the Pacific Crest Trail, but do we have the will to finish it? We also have to provide backpackers with places to stay ozark trail tent along the way. That evening, as Janell and I sat outside our tent on the empty beach, the sun flattened directly into the sea, turning square and wobbly before it vanished.

Without official beach camping areas, the 12-mile Boardman Corridor isn’t very friendly to backpackers. Most people will go left, get to the viewing platform, and either turn around or continue on the trail. Continuing on the path means you’re going away from the bridges and you’re hiking along the Coastal Trail. Head to the right of the parking lot and make sure you have good shoes on, no kids with you, and a strong sense of adventure. ozark trail tent maximize warmth and comfort even in extreme temperatures. They come with a water-repellent finish to keep them moisture-resistant for all backpacking and hiking trips.
