Vision cleans up: Dyson robot vacuum navigates with imaging Imaging and Machine Vision Europe

But Dyson’s business model isn’t making gadgets that are cheap; it’s making gadgets that are worth it. But this time will be different, judging from Dyson’s excitement about the new Roomba competitor. The Dyson 360 Vis Nav’s big claim to fame is that it’s the most powerful robot vacuum on the market, with Dyson claiming the device has twice the suction power of its nearest competitor. That’s a pretty impressive feat, but anyone who’s ever used a robot vacuum knows that suction power, while important, pales in comparison to the appliances’ ability to smartly navigate around obstacles and map your home. The new Roomba competitor is not Dyson’s first foray into the world of robot vacuums. The brand previously launched two other robot vacuums, to limited success.

The Dyson 360 Vis NavTM robot vacuum has four different cleaning modes, so you can clean your way. Auto mode is recommended and analyses dust levels, automatically increasing suction power when more dust is identified. Quiet mode reduces noise for peaceful areas – and longer run time. Boost mode provides greater suction to clean ground-in dirt and pet hair. You can choose power through the My DysonTM app or on the LCD screen on the 360 Vis NavTM robot vacuum. There’s no option of mopping or self-emptying, which we’ve seen on a lot of new robot vacuums today, nor does it appear to have AI-powered obstacle avoidance (just regular debris dodging).

Our home is 1800 sq feet and I’m not willing to remap the whole works for one missing piece. A lot of homes are open concept in Canada, and the zoning feature doesn’t work well when there are no walls. Along with the 360 Vis Nav, Dyson launched the latest versions of its famous cordless vacuums, the Gen5detect and Gen5outsize. Using the fifth generation of Dyson’s Hyperdymium motors, they’re “smaller, faster and more powerful” than past models and even capable of “capturing viruses from your home,” Dyson promised.

For now, Dyson is withholding pricing and release information for the 360 Vis Nav — but the brand has confirmed that a US release will happen (apparently, this thing can handle our notoriously huge and tough-to-navigate homes). shark cordless The robot vacuum is first launching in Australia, where it’s been priced at $AUD 2,399 (~ $1,590), according to Engadget. Of course, this is far from the first time Dyson has attached an eye-popping price tag to a new product.

It’s also worth mentioning that some 360 Eye press materials suggest that the vacuum can identify what kind of surface it’s on, and will prioritize cleaning “easier” surfaces first. The unnamed robovac comes in the same striking nickel blue irobot vacuum cleaner color as its predecessor, and has tank treads and a detachable dust bin, just like Dyson’s previous forays into this product category. It also looks like the device (labelled RB03) has the Heurist’s 360-degree camera with LED lighting ring.

In fact, the round-shaped, dust canister makes a great design feature. I was surprised to see such a small container holding so much grime in just one cleaning session. But it was so easy to empty out into the trash can by simply pushing the release button to open the bottom lid. This is just a matter of personal preference (and my laziness), but it doesn’t have self-emptying, self-cleaning or mop capabilities. It’s certainly something to consider when justifying the eye-watering price of the Dyson Vis Nav.
