The simplicity of the Hamilton Beach Big Mouth Juice Extractor ensures an intuitive and easy juicing experience. Stability can be a bit of a problem when the machine is first turned on, but the size of the juicer makes it easy to secure while still feeding produce into the chute. There is also only one processing speed, but we didn’t find this to be a problem, even when juicing kale. In addition to the main body, there are just four components and all four of these removable parts are dishwasher safe. Combined with the brush for use on the mesh strainer, there are no cleaning challenges; this is a juicer designer for daily use. The package does not include a juice collector, nor does it include additional components aside from a cleaning brush.
Cost, size, clean-up, handling of the machine, and the fact that they were so similar in performance, were factors that led us to choose Hamilton Beach over Breville. The extra $100 for the Breville machine versus Hamilton Beach was not worth it in our opinion. I don’t see how it could be worth it for anyone, unless looks is the most important part.
You may remember my first Hamilton Beach Juicer review on Stagetecture in 2012 and I’m excited to pair up with them again to feature their larger model juicer. It has much more power and I’m going to share with you how I keep juice longer in your refrigerator so you don’t have to juice as often. What I love most is the 2 speeds that allow you to chop up kale and more fibrous vegetables quicker. The larger size mouth also allows for whole apples and larger fruits and vegetables so I didn’t have to cut everything into small pieces. It produced about 15mL less juice than the average with little pulp and approximately a half-inch of foam on top. We finished with an essentially average yield of juice, but there was tons of pulp in the drink. The juice also rapidly separated, and there was a lot of foam on the surface.
The Big Mouth started this metric with a solid performance at juicing cucumbers, tying for one of the higher scores. It generated an above-average juice yield, exceeding the average by about 15mL, and produced only mild amounts of foam, though there were moderate amounts of pulp. Performance fell a little when it came to juicing celery, with the Big Mouth only producing an average amount of juice. This juice also had moderate pulp and foam and separated relatively quickly. It is taller and wider than Hamilton Beach, requiring a bit more storage space. At the same time, the juice container is much larger, which is a plus if you do a lot of juicing in one sitting.
When comparing, using similar amounts of produce going through both machines, they produced the same amount of juice. If the Breville produced better (by teaspoons, maybe), it was not enough to justify spending the extra money based on this alone. The pulp from Breville was a tad bit dryer, didn’t stick to my fingers as much, which suggests more juice having been extracted from it. This ensures a sleek silhouette, but a slightly larger footprint of 14.50 x 10.75 x 7.75 inches; still, this should fit conveniently on any countertop. All plastic components come in transparent black, but the main body is available in either black or silver hues.
Both machines made some mess on the counters, back splash, and under the cabinets when fruits and vegetables were added to the juicers. Tiny pieces of pulp would spray out from the opening while the machines were running. This juicer also struggled with spinach, again having a lower than average yield, but this time producing about an inch of foam.
