Tinned Pipe Tobacco

Despite the name, Virginias are grown in numerous locales. There are several varieties of Virginias, but all are characterized by a relatively high sugar content. Virginias are often used as the base tobacco in blends, but they are smoked “straight” as well. Straight Virginias undergo changes in flavor as they age, similar to fine wines.

However, this is not the start of tobacco, as it has been used in the Americas for far longer than that. The story of tobacco in the world is long, rich, and not centralized to one location. What was once native to the “New World” is now cultivated, grown, and improved in countries around the world, from the United States, to Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, and Syria. We joked that the size of the slug we were shooting was so large that the air pressure should have knocked the can over as it went by. Another six rounds fired off and Prince Albert still stood proudly facing us. As the youngest brother, it would be nice if I could hit the target the others missed.

For example, we have both the classic Borkum Riff blend and the wildly popular Borkum Riff bourbon whiskey mixture. Both of these items are flavorful and smooth and will be delivered to you in 7-ounce cans. Non-aromatic, or English, tobaccos are earthy, woody, and spicy by comparison.

In the U.S., burley tobacco plants are started from pelletized seeds placed in polystyrene trays floated on a bed of fertilized water in March or April. Transplanting begins in May and progresses through June with a small percentage set in July. Producers must contend with major diseases such as black shank and blue mold and insects like aphids, hornworms and budworms. Plants are topped by removing the developing flower head at approximately 60 days from transplanting and treated to prevent the growth of side shoots called suckers.

Pipe smoking requires a little more maintenance than cigar smoking. Most pipes designed for smoking tobacco are made of briar, corncob, or meerschaum. Briar is the most traditional and common material for making pipes. Briar is a dense root harvested in the Mediterranean Basin. Briar pipes range in cost from roughly $20 or $30 to several hundred or several thousands of dollars apiece. Corncob is inexpensive (think Popeye), and meerschaum is a soft, porous sea foam that is often carved with intricate designs.

One reason for this change is the belief that pipe smoking is less harmful than cigarettes. Pipe tobacco may also contain heavy metals, like Pipe Tobacco in Cans lead and cadmium, due to soil contamination. Tracking the taste of your aging tobacco is the best way to make sure it’s aging properly.

Research shows that pipe smokers are at an increased risk of cancers of the head and neck, lungs, and liver. Even people who’ve always smoked pipes or cigars (and never cigarettes) have an increased risk of developing these cancers when compared with those who’ve never smoked any tobacco product. Cigar and pipe smokers often argue that their health isn’t at risk because they only smoke one or two a day and they don’t inhale.

In 2016, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) extended a rule that gives the FDA regulatory authority over all tobacco products, including pipe tobacco. The manufacture, packaging, and labeling of all tobacco products must meet FDA guidelines, as well as how products are advertised, promoted, sold and even imported. A bowl of pipe tobacco is smaller, and smokers don’t inhale as much, so getting an accurate measure of nicotine absorption is difficult. However, a 3-gram bowl of tobacco with 150mg of nicotine can deliver a small amount of nicotine into the bloodstream. A hookah pipe bowl can contain 10 to 15 grams of tobacco (shared among a few users), while most regular pipe bowls hold 1 to 3 grams of tobacco. Hookah is typically smoked at a hookah lounge or in a social setting, so hookah smokers might only smoke once every few days or once a week.
