To clean the grates, build a fire, heat up the grill, and then take a bristle-free wire brush (metal bristles can fall out and end up in your food, and you don’t want that) and scrape. Every few cooks, I like to use a Shop-Vac to remove any greasy ashes stuck in weber charcoal grill the bottom of the grill. As a preventative, you’ll want to oil the meats and veggies before they go on to prevent sticking and extra scraping. A heat shield just beneath the heat-resistant glass-reinforced nylon lid handle prevents you from burning yourself.
While the Weber is a very basic cooker, it does have a few helpful features. There’s the elevated ash catcher, which makes dumping the remnants easier than with the original model (see the Ease of Cleaning section). With grilling, the ability to cook on direct heat means that your food will be ready quickly.
With this method, the coals take about 10 minutes to light and another 10 for the grill to get hot. There’s nothing quite like the combo of enjoying the great outdoors while smelling the delectable aroma of fresh-grilled foods. I love my Weber Smokey Joe and my Weber 18 inch One Touch Silver and still use them on a regular basis. I use my charcoal grill on a wooden deck as you’ll see in the images below. The portable bbq cost of the grill is justified with thoughtful design features, like a hinged lid with an XL handle, a front-loading fuel door so you can easily add or remove charcoal or wood.
When it was time to cook, we filled a charcoal chimney starter with Kingsford Professional Competition Briquettes. When coals were ready we dumped the coals to cover exactly half of each grill’s charcoal grate (using grilling tongs to adjust if necessary). We replaced or unfolded the cooking grate, depending on the grill, put the lid on, and let each grill warm up for 15 minutes. Smoking is a process in which meats are cooked at a much lower temperature for an extended period.
The Napoleon grill we tested had hinges on opposite sides of the grate, too. But the PK Grill had a hinge on only one side, which proved inconvenient. All the grills we tested featured simple, thin-wire grates that worked well, with no notable sticking.
