What many ‘old-timers’, and freshwater fishermen recall about the shakespeare fishing reel rods and reels, was the very first push-button ‘Wondercast Spinning Reel’, created in 1953. The company has moved forward in a big way, and now remains a leading manufacturer and supplier of freshwater rods, for the fishing industry. Following the establishment of its two new manufacturing facilities, Shakespeare concentrated on building its existing businesses through acquisitions, taking a temporary reprieve–with one exception–from entering new business areas.
The one exception to the company’s strategy of strengthening established businesses during this period was the creation of a ski division in 1970, facilitated by a distribution and sales arrangement with Yugoslavia-based Elan Ski Company. Operated through the Shakespeare shakespeare reels Sporting Goods Division, the ski segment manufactured skis, bindings, poles, and a line of ski apparel. An integral subsidiary of K2 Inc., Shakespeare Company manufactures fishing tackle equipment, marine antennas, fiberglass utility poles, and monofilament.
Shakespeare made several more level-winds and handed them out. The level-winds were an immediate hit, and that was all the market testing Shakespeare needed. He filed for a patent and quickly prepared himself for his new entrepreneurial career. And there’s no doubting that Shakespeare fishing rods get you out on the water with quality and performance for less. Since the early 2000’s Shakespeare has been innovating rods and reels, amongst other terminal tackle items, with the Catch More Fish kits, to our best in class line of licensed kid’s products. Shakespeare certainly offers something for the whole family and all levels of experience whether you are just starting out or are a professional.
Do rods lack a little of the refinement and some of the bells and whistles of their competitors? Having said that, this particular Stik has a strange action. I’ve never actually been satisfied with the overall performance of the fishing rod. I’ve put my Ugly Stik fishing rods through hell, and apart from being very faded, not even a line guide has been compromised. In hindsight, I now understand that Ugly Stik rods were substantially more expensive than other Shakespeare fishing rods. I didn’t actually own an Ugly Stik until my early 20’s when I bought a blue water spin model that I still have and use to this day.
