St. James Perique is extremely rare, so the tobacco is produced elsewhere to meet demands, though without the same results. Kentucky Green River Burley is most commonly used to make Perique. This particular version is the Perique Pipe Tobacco in Cans that most pipe smokers are familiar with. Once the tobacco “drinks” the sauce, it’s conditioned in large cylinders that dry it back to the desired moisture level, generally between 12% (on the dry side) and 22% (very moist).
Along those lines, Tarek Manadily has written an interesting article called Pressed Tobaccos and Flake Pipes. It is commonly held that briar can alter the taste of tobacco, and that a clean clay pipe should be used with a first-time trial run of any tobacco, in order to derive the purest taste. The flavor I tasted was mostly the Virginia and burley with a bit of spice, the further I got into the bowl the more of the Latakia I tasted. Essentially the roundness and symmetry of Bag End’s overall softened taste is truly amazing. By skillful blending each varietal is afforded proper equity in the effort to achieve tasteful elegance and harmony.
Just like any other leaf, there’s good and there’s not so good. So, it’s unwise to condemn all Burleys, as so many do, just because of a bad experience with inferior leaf.”

As for the Latakia, I think that the amount used here is done quite to balance. However, the blender’s description of “Perfect for the Latakia lover” is a bit deceiving because Bag End contains just a trace of it. It does come through in nearly every puff, but only in nuance. Those expecting more Latakia flavor based on the description might be disappointed. A “bright” VA is named as such because it’s taken from the top of the plant, where the highest quality leaf is.
Stick with something that has a lot of natural flavor present, and smoke slowly. Try letting the pipe go out for a while, and then coming back Pipe Tobacco in Bags to it. This intensifies the flavors, and gives your palate a chance to zero in on what you are going to be looking for in future smokes.
Perique is subjected to extreme pressure and is allowed to ferment as it is cured, which results in a very distinctive tobacco. OHM Silver Pipe Tobacco recommends regularly scooping out the tobacco residue and cleaning it with a soft cloth. It is essential to prevent the buildup of stale tobacco residue, so you need to empty the ash and burned tobacco from the stummel after each smoke.
